Gallery Show: During Covid Times

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Gallery Show. The last one was in June 2020, when we all were in the throng of Covid. Many of us were still spending most of our days inside. It was also the time when we all went virtual. A new word. Although all of my Gallery Shows had been virtual, I wasn’t calling in that. Pivoting to the new world here is my latest Virtual Galley Show.

All of these photos were shot between May 2020, when I finally left the house after self-isolating, and May 2021, when I received my 2nd Covid Vax shot.

May 13, 2020. For me this is the day that life as we knew it changed. I had just begun to feel like myself after having Gallbladder surgery just before Christmas. I was beginning to market myself as a Personal Branding photographer and two community theatre productions was in the works. One that was scheduled to go on stage in a week, I was the production photographer, and another that was getting ready to begin rehearsals. This one not only was I going to be the production photographer, but also its Stage Manager. Needless to say my world fell apart.

While I did venture out of the house a few times in the last half of March, I self-isolated for the month of April.

Most of the photos I shot during these first week’s of Covid was from my windows. I watched this rose grow from a small bud to maturity as seen here.

Beginning in May I began to ventured out some, but it really wasn’t until August when the Town of Betterton in Kent County had a grand opening of their new playground that I began to accept the changes that we all felt. Near the playground are a set of steps that seem to lead to nowhere. Once upon a time many school children had taken these step to the town’s school. The school is long gone with a park taking its place.

As summer came to an end and the weather cooled I began going out by myself to capture photos of autumn. These next two photos are from a couple of those trips. One to the docks in Rock Hall to capture the sunset with the Oysterman’s Memorial in the foreground and the second of a man-made lake that I stop at from time to time. Sometimes I get a photo like this.

By February of 2021, I began going out again doing a series of “Points of Interest” articles for the ChesaDel Crier. These photos were taken on a couple of trips on the Harriet Tubman Byway. The first from Long Wharf Park in Cambridge and the 2nd from Christian Park/Red Bridges near Greensboro.

In 2015 I began a photo project I called Delmarva Scenes. The concept was to photograph the Usual, Unusual, Beautiful, and Not so Pretty Scenes of the Delmarva Peninsula. For a multitude ofreasons I haven’t been able to get to many spots in Delaware, Maryland’s Lower Shore and Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Early in 2021 the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) “America’s Byways” announced the establishment of the Chesapeake Country All-American Road, expanding the previous Chesapeake Country Byway that had run from Chesapeake City to Kent Island, to cover the entire Chesapeake Bay Region of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. In April, Easter Morning to be exact, I came to the realization I had been many of my photographs had been taken along the original Chesapeake Country Byway. I formally began the project Chesapeake Country Roads, where each week I’m posting a “Drives with Steve” photo-essay on Sunday and a “Photo of the Week” on Thursday.

In many ways after I received my 2nd shot of the Covid Vax life became a lot like it had been before March 2020. I began attending events, the community theatre I volunteer at opened and I have taken many Chesapeake Country Roads photographs. In the later half od 2021 I publishing three 2022 Calendar and now am working on a book of photographs of Chesapeake County Roads between Chesapeake City and Kent Island. You’ll never know, some of these may even be included.
